In my second international in-person interview recorded in Japan, I sit down with Luis, whom I met at Hillsong Tokyo at their grand opening. What began as two strangers sitting next to each other at church quickly turned into a meaningful conversation about faith, identity, marriage, culture, and the lifelong process of personal growth. Together, we explore how God often brings people together in unexpected places and how international travel can broaden not only our worldview but also our understanding of ourselves.

Luis shares his journey from growing up in the Dominican Republic to building a life in the United States, raising four sons, and eventually finding himself traveling through Japan. He opens up about marrying at a young age, navigating cultural differences within marriage, experiencing divorce, pursuing reconciliation, and the lessons counseling taught him about codependency, emotional health, communication, and aligning values before entering a lifelong commitment. His story highlights how unresolved personal struggles can quietly influence relationships and why genuine healing begins with honest self-examination rather than simply changing circumstances.

Throughout the conversation, I contribute my own experiences growing up in a controlling household, traveling internationally, and witnessing the incredible diversity of cultures around the world. Together we discuss why so many people unknowingly build their identity around careers, relationships, or other people's expectations instead of discovering who they truly are. We also examine loneliness, mental health, addiction, suicide prevention, emotional maturity, empathy, and the importance of finding purpose that extends beyond temporary success or external validation.

Additionally, Luis shares about the importance of getting involved in local and even federal politics to make voices heard and to help push for change or defend systems, laws, and beliefs that are under attack.
